We did some flame tests in lab tonight. This flame is
mostly methanol, but you can see the magenta color of lithum near the
bottom of the flame. After a few more seconds, the methanol flame would
die down and you'd see much more of the lithium. Each element emits light
at a characteristic color, which usually consists of just a few discrete
wavelengths.
